"Gulf Oil" and "endurance racing" are synonymous. For over 40 years Gulf liveried cars have thrilled spectators at the Le Mans 24 hours race. The first drivers to win this prestigious event, in 1968 wearing the Gulf colours, were Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi driving a Ford GT 40. Many other great drivers have piloted and won races in Gulf livered racing cars, such as Jackie Ickx in the Mirage Ford M1 and the Ford GT 40, Bruce McLaren and Jody Schecketer driving the McLaren cars, Derek Bell in the Porsche 917s and Stephan Johansson in the Audi R8. |
| Another icon for the Gulf colours was Steve McQueen, who starred in the cult racing car movie "Le Mans". The film achieved huge fame and fortune capturing the excitement and nerve of professional race car driving. The car used was the Porsche 917 painted in Gulf racing colours, identical with the Porsches that were winning the Le Mans races of the early 1970s. |
| Most recently several ex Formula 1 drivers have featured behind the wheel of Gulf liveried cars. In 2008 Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger teamed up with Andrea Piccini in the Aston Martin Racing DBR9 race car No 007 and David Brabham, Darren Turner and Antonio Garcia for the Aston Martin Racing DBR9 race car no 009. They made a magical duo of cars in and No 009 secured a stunning victory in the GT1 category. This win ensured that the legacy of Gulf in motorsport is set to continue... | ![]() |
