Very few people knew about the agreement with Gulf, J.W Automotive and Porsche to run the factory's official world championship program in 1970 and 1971.
With still more races in 1969, but the focus on the next decade the project was scaled down and only one car was entered at the Watkins Glen and Osterreiching events. They knew the Mirage would disappear at the end of the year so they persevered with the Cosworth DFV powered car to transform it to the M3 version.
After removing the roof, they redesigned the front suspension to eliminate the anti drive geometry. The Mirage made its final appearance at Imola to prove itself after the steering column support bracket sheared in the Osterreichring race, after starting in pole position, and holding this all the way through to its final victory, it was taken away as a museum piece as they prepared to unleash the wrath of the Porsche 917s.
