The McLaren F1 took three years to develop from its early days in 1989 to a public launch at the sporting club in Monaco in may 1992, 18 more months to perfect it and the £540,000 super car was unleashed in 1994.
The McLaren F1 had the driver in the centre at the front with two passenger seats set a little back on either side. Gull wing doors, a bespoke engine BMW V12 exerting superior performance. Six of them were made and all raced in the 1995 and 1996 seasons with Rau Bellm and Lindsay Owen-Jones backed by Gulf oil. Gulf became involved n the project through Kate Wilson, and Bellm met Gulf oil executive Allerton at the Coys festival meeting in 1994, by mid august Allerton had a proposal to show his directors and it was agreed and signed off my mid September. The McLaren F1 appeared in the dark blue and orange colours of gulf in the 90s.
