1964: The Birth of the GT 40
In 1963, John Wyer, executive vice-president of Gulf Oil at the time was offered the post of residential manager, special vehicles activity, responsible for the GT40 program.
1966: Gulf and Ford
In 1966 the Gulf Ford partnership saw a much-needed turnaround in fortunes. The Ford MK11s secured the top three places in the 24-hour race at Daytona.
1968/69/75: Victory at Le Mans
The 24-hour race at Le Mans is Gulfs biggest motor sports sponsorship deal, and the first victory for Gulf-Ford came in 1968. It was the Gulf-Ford GT40 that won it with Rodriguez and Bianchi leading them to victory.
1969: A deal with Porsche
Very few people knew about the agreement with Gulf, J.W Automotive and Porsche to run the factory's official world championship program in 1970 and 1971.
1971: Steve McQueen & Gulf's Hollywood Adventure
The Le Mans movie of the 1970 race was brilliant publicity for Gulf, ask anyone who watched it who one the 1970 Le Mans and they would probably say Steve McQueen in the Gulf Porsche 917, the blue and orange one.
1989: The birth of the McLaren F1
The McLaren F1 took three years to develop from its early days in 1989 to a public launch at the sporting club in Monaco in may 1992, 18 more months to perfect it and the £540,000 super car was unleashed in 1994.
2001: Gulf Sponsors Johansson Audi
The Audi R8 raced in the traditional gulf powder blue and orange. At the 2001 Sebring 12 hour race in March they made a terrific start and were leading in the early stages of the race but due to a flat battery leading to many electrical difficulties they finished in 4th pace overall.
2005/06: Paul Belmondo Racing (PBR)
PBR was formed at the start of the 1999 season and was jointly owned by former Formula One racing driver Paul Belmondo and Industrialist/racer Claude-Yves Gosselin.
