The Macmillan nursing organisation, funded solely from donations to its charity, is dedicated to the care and support for people suffering from terminal illnesses, such as cancer. It is of personal significance to me: in 2002 one of my friends mysteriously became infected with sporadic CJD (Creuztfeldt-Jakob Disease). This is an irreversible and incurable neurodegenerative disease. My friend gradually lost all neural motor functions and was cared for during the final and very distressful weeks by Macmillan nurses. Each year since then, I have taken part in the Gower Macmarathon - a 22 mile (32 km) walk along the cliff coast of the Gower peninsula in S Wales to raise funds to support the Macmillan charity. This year the route was treacherously slippery, following heavy rain the day before. The walk was completed in a total of 9 hours (after several stops to assist people who had fallen, and also for essential refreshments !)Many thanks to my colleagues in Gulf Oil International who have generously contributed to the charity this year.To learn more: www.macmillan.org.uk
