When you ride a motorcycle, you can really feel when there’s a drop in performance. From chain drag to slower-than-usual acceleration. Or perhaps you bought your bike on a budget, and now you’re looking for ways to boost motorcycle performance to wring out every last ounce of power. Thankfully, there are a few simple adjustments you can make to increase horsepower, reduce chain drag and supercharge acceleration.
Airflow and exhaust
Increasing air intake is a surefire way to support combustion and give your bike a boost. Try replacing your air filters with ones that allow more airflow. This is generally considered one of the cheapest and simplest ways to improve motorcycle performance.
The same goes for the exhaust; your engine relies on a seamless flow of air in and out of the engine. Some manufacturer exhaust systems are chosen to keep costs low, compromising their ability to efficiently expel gases. An aftermarket unit is typically lighter and more efficient, allowing your engine to breathe better for a potential increase in horsepower.
Suspension
Upgrading to an adjustable suspension over regular springs can help you squeeze a little extra acceleration out of your bike, with the added benefit of better handling. An adjustable suspension allows you to change the compression and damping settings according to your weight and driving style.
Customising your bike to suit you rather than adapting your riding to suit the bike will ensure it naturally responds to your commands, making for a much smoother ride.
Chain maintenance
Regularly cleaning and maintaining your chain is one of the most straightforward ways to improve your motorbike’s performance. Invest in a quality cleaning kit and some decent chain oil and commit to cleaning it every week, or more if you’re riding off-road. Doing so is sure to reduce drag and keep your chain in optimal condition.
Tyres
Replacing your tyres can feel like an annoying expense. However, if more power is your priority then you shouldn’t put it off. It goes without saying that new tyres offer better performance, grip, and acceleration than those old worn-out ones.
You should also consider your riding habits and choose a tyre that’s aligned to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
Weight
If you’re trying to improve speed and acceleration, then simply reducing the weight of your bike could offer the boost you’re looking for. Just be careful when replacing heavy-duty parts with lighter equivalents; the reduced weight may signal a lack of quality.
Look for parts made of forged aluminium, carbon fibre, or cast magnesium to reduce weight without compromising durability.
Riding technique
It may come as a surprise to learn that your riding style itself is significantly impacting the performance of your motorcycle. Try to relax and reduce upper body tension when you’re riding, because this stops the bars from moving freely and fluidly around corners.
The front brake should be reserved for hard braking, any finer speed adjustments should be made with the rear brake. You should also practice gradual throttle control and learn to transition smoothly from braking to acceleration. A few simple adjustments and you could see big changes in performance.
Oil changes
One of the best things you can do to improve motorcycle performance is to stay on top of your fluid levels and maintenance, including engine oil checks and regular changes. Engine oil can impact motorcycle performance in lots of different ways, from the type of oil you choose to the way you use your bike.
You should always check your manufacturer’s recommendations to see how often you should change your oil, and what type is best suited to your bike.
Factors affecting motorcycle performance
There are lots of different factors affecting motorcycle performance whether that means a lack of power or poor handling and braking. Be sure to identify the key areas that need improving and make the necessary modifications accordingly.
For example, if acceleration is the issue, you may want to look at air intake, tyres, and weight. If your handling is the issue, try a new suspension system or adjust your riding style.
Ultimately, one of the best ways to boost the overall performance of your bike, including power, fuel efficiency, and handling, is by staying on top of a routine maintenance schedule. This includes using high-quality parts for any repairs and investing in premium motorcycle lubrication.
