Machine lubricants are specialised oils and greases designed to reduce friction, dissipate heat and protect moving components within complex machinery.
From heavy-duty industrial equipment to precision manufacturing tools, proper lubrication reduces wear and tear, improves machine health and minimises the risk of breakdowns.
To achieve optimal performance and longevity for your machinery, it's essential to understand the role of lubricants and the benefits they offer.
Maximising Machinery Performance with the Right Lubricants
Proper lubrication plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation, longevity and reliability of machines.
It creates a robust oil coating over the various components inside a machine to reduce friction when they move against each other, allowing for a smooth and efficient operation. This coating also protects the components from corrosion, which can lead to premature wear and unexpected breakdowns.
Properly lubricating machinery offers several key benefits:
Reduces friction and heat
By coating components in a protective film, machinery lubricants reduce friction and therefore heat, preventing critical failures caused by overheating.
Prevents rust and contamination
Effective machine lubricants are also able to filter out harmful contaminants that can damage components, while some also have additives known as rust inhibitors.
Extends lifespan
Machine lubrication plays a vital role in reducing wear and tear and preventing costly replacements, prolonging the lifespan of your machinery and increasing resale value.
Improves performance
Lubricating machinery can enhance its load-bearing capacity. This is because lubricants help components withstand higher loads and stresses.
Reduces energy consumption
With less friction, less energy is needed to keep machinery parts moving. This improves the overall efficiency of your machine and reduces energy costs.
Minimise machine downtime
Fewer breakdowns and unexpected issues lead to fewer accidents on site. Meanwhile, lubricants also help filter out contaminants, improving the overall health and safety of your operation.
Offers preventive maintenance
By regularly checking, changing, and topping up your machinery lubrication, you can protect your equipment from the risk of unexpected breakdowns, and costly periods of downtime.
What is the best type of machinery lubrication?
The best type of lubrication for your machine depends on a range of factors, including the type of machine, the machine’s environment and application, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Different machinery lubricants have different viscosity levels, depending on how thick or thin they are. They also contain a range of different additives to suit specific machinery needs, from reducing rust to withstand extreme temperatures.
Understanding your machine, reading the manual instructions on lubrication, and considering the industrial environment you are working in are the first steps to choosing the best lubricant for your machine.
Lubricating machinery: Best practices
Industrial lubricants are tailored to boost the efficiency of your machines. However, improving the reliability and performance of your equipment also requires a well executed preventive maintenance schedule. This includes a range of tasks depending on the machine but generally involves:
Assessment and Identification: Undertake a thorough assessment of each machine under your supervision to figure out which machinery lubricants are best suited and identify the correct change intervals and maintenance requirements.
Scheduling: Create a clear schedule for operators so that they know when to check and change all machinery lubricants. Include clear instructions for each task such as checking and topping up oil, dispensing grease, identifying contaminated oil and changing as necessary.
Analysis: Analyse used oil and lubricants to assess machine health, contaminant levels, and performance, adjusting the maintenance schedule accordingly.
Conclusion
Industrial lubricants play an important role in maximising machine efficiency and longevity. When applied as part of best practice and preventive maintenance schedules, our industrial lubricants help to lower operational costs, reduce downtime, boost productivity and ultimately, improves the total cost of ownership.
