Riding a motorcycle is all about freedom, adventure and the thrill of the open road. Whether you’re new to riding or have years of experience under your belt, staying safe is what keeps those rides enjoyable. While every journey has its risks, a little preparation and the right habits can go a long way in keeping you and your bike in great shape.
Check out our top motorcycle safety tips to help you ride with confidence and peace of mind.
1. Invest in proper protective gear (and wear it!)
No matter where in the world you’re riding, wearing the right protective gear is one of the most important things you can do for your safety. It’s your best defence in an accident and helps keep you comfortable in different climates and road conditions.
Wear a certified helmet
Your helmet is the most important piece of protective equipment, and regulations for helmets vary by country. The World Health Organisation states that ‘quality helmets reduce the risk of death by over six times and reduce the risk of brain injury by up to 74%’, so wearing a helmet is essential for your safety. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Look for safety standards relevant to your region, such as ECE 22.05 or 22.06 (Europe), DOT (United States), or ISI (India). These certifications mean the helmet has been tested for impact resistance and durability.
- A helmet should fit snugly without causing discomfort. It shouldn’t move when you shake your head but also shouldn’t feel overly tight. Many manufacturers provide size guides to help you choose the perfect fit.
- Full-face helmets provide the most coverage, protecting not just your skull but also your face and chin, which are vulnerable areas during crashes.
- Helmets should be replaced every 3–5 years due to wear and tear or immediately after an accident, even if there’s no visible damage.
Wear protective motorcycle gear
Your clothing should be more than stylish—it needs to offer real protection. Materials and designs for motorcycle gear are often chosen to suit local climates and riding conditions.
- Wear jackets and trousers made from durable, abrasion-resistant fabrics like leather or textile options with reinforced panels. Many jackets now include built-in armour for added protection on the shoulders, elbows and back.
- Choose gloves made from leather or textile with features like knuckle protection, padded palms and breathable materials for hot climates.
High-visibility elements
- Being seen is just as important as being protected, especially in regions with dense traffic or lack of lighting.
- Many jackets and helmets now incorporate reflective strips or panels. Or, you can add reflective tape or wear a reflective vest over your gear.
- While black gear is popular, vibrant colours like neon yellow, orange, or red can make you stand out in heavy traffic or on dark roads.
- A bright or white helmet can improve visibility, particularly in countries with high sun exposure or hazy conditions.
2. Practise defensive motorcycle riding techniques
Defensive riding is all about staying alert, anticipating potential hazards and making proactive decisions to keep yourself safe. Here are some things you can do when you ride:
Maintain a safe distance
Keeping a safe buffer zone around your bike gives you more time and space to react to sudden changes in traffic.
- Leave at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front (four seconds in wet or poor visibility conditions). This gives you more time to react to sudden braking or unexpected obstacles.
- You should also avoid riding too close to vehicles on your sides. Having a clear escape route can make all the difference in an emergency.
Position yourself for visibility
Being seen by other road users is vital, as motorcycles could be overlooked due to their size. Additionally, in Europe, motorcycles using daytime running lights have reduced visibility-related crashes by 10-16%.
- Stay out of blind spots and avoid lingering alongside cars or trucks where the driver may not see you. Always assume they might not check their mirrors.
- Adjust your position within the lane to maximise visibility to other drivers, especially at junctions and roundabouts. For example, riding closer to the centerline makes you more visible to oncoming vehicles turning left (or right, depending on your country).
Use your signals
Clear communication with other road users helps prevent misunderstandings and accidents:
- Signal your intentions early. Whether turning, merging, or changing lanes, use your indicators well in advance to give other drivers enough time to react.
- Be consistent and avoid sudden or unpredictable movements. A steady, deliberate riding style makes it easier for others to anticipate your actions.
- In some situations, especially in heavy traffic or group rides, using hand signals can provide clarity.
3. Ride your motorcycle according to road and weather conditions
Motorcycles are more sensitive to environmental changes than other vehicles, so be sure to adjust your riding style to match road and weather conditions to stay safe and in control.
Here’s how to stay prepared:
In wet or icy conditions
Riding in rain, snow, or ice can significantly reduce traction and increase stopping distances.
- Slower speeds give you more time to react and reduce the chances of losing traction.
- Double or even triple the distance between you and the vehicle in front. This gives you ample room to stop gradually.
- Sudden braking, sharp turns, or quick throttle adjustments can lead to skidding or loss of control.
- Use gentle inputs for braking, steering and accelerating to maintain stability.
- Avoid puddles, which could hide potholes, and watch out for shiny, slippery surfaces like wet leaves or metal manhole covers.
On uneven terrain
Gravel, sand, or poorly maintained roads require extra focus and control.
- Slow down on your approach before entering uneven terrain to give yourself more control and reduce the impact of unexpected obstacles.
- Keep your weight centred and grip the handlebars lightly to let the bike respond naturally to the surface and stay balanced.
- When riding on loose terrain, such as gravel or sand, use your feet as stabilisers when moving slowly.
In high traffic
Heavy traffic poses a unique set of challenges, including frequent stops, tight spaces and unpredictable driver behaviour.
- Assume that cars might change lanes suddenly or brake unexpectedly, especially in congested areas.
- Resist the temptation to weave in and out of traffic, as this increases the risk of not being seen by drivers.
- Position yourself where drivers are most likely to see you, such as slightly ahead or behind their blind spots.
- Keep an eye on vehicle indicators and body language, such as drivers glancing at their mirrors, to anticipate lane changes.
Adapting to your environment isn’t just about avoiding accidents - it’s about riding with confidence, regardless of what the road throws at you. With careful adjustments and heightened awareness, you can tackle diverse conditions while staying safe and in control.
4. Riding smart to prolong your motorcycle’s condition
How you ride has a significant impact on your motorcycle's long-term performance and condition. Use these techniques to reduce wear and tear:
Smooth acceleration and braking
Avoid sudden starts or stops. Gradual acceleration and controlled braking are gentler on your engine, brakes, and tyres.
Shift gears correctly
Shift at the appropriate RPMs for your bike to prevent engine strain. Don’t “lug” the engine by staying in too high a gear at low speeds.
Avoid high RPMs for long periods
Riding at excessively high revolutions can overheat and wear out your engine. Stay within the recommended range for better efficiency.
Use engine braking
Instead of relying solely on the brakes, downshift to reduce speed. This technique reduces brake wear and helps maintain control.
Avoid hard cornering
Taking corners aggressively can stress tyres and suspension components. Maintain a smooth and steady approach through turns.
Warm up the engine
Let your motorcycle idle for a minute or two before setting off, especially in colder weather. This allows oil to circulate properly and reduces engine wear.
Keep loads balanced
Overloading your bike or distributing weight unevenly can strain the suspension and tyres, reducing handling and performance.
By adopting these habits, you’ll not only enjoy a smoother ride but also extend the lifespan of your motorcycle.
5. Ongoing maintenance, training and rider safety
Staying safe on the road is essential, no matter how long you’ve been riding a motorcycle. Here are a few more tips for staying safe while on the road.
Pre-ride safety checks: Before setting off on a long journey, or if you haven’t ridden your motorcycle in a while, you should do a quick pre-ride safety check. Check your tyres, brakes and lights are working and ensure your fluid levels are sufficient. Regular checks significantly reduce breakdowns and crash risks.
Ongoing rider training: If you’ve recently passed your test or have had a long break since you last rode, refresher training can be hugely beneficial. Even experienced riders benefit from skills refreshers to keep up with the latest safety standards and recommendations.
Riding with others or in groups safely: By riding with other people, you can learn how to position yourself in a group setting, signal efficiently, and communicate with other road users. This helps reduce the risk of misunderstandings.
Mental and physical state: Don’t ride your motorcycle when you are tired, under the influence, or distracted. Many accidents result from rider impairment or lack of concentration.
Safety on the road is about preparation, awareness, and consistent practice. By wearing the right gear, adapting your riding style to conditions, and following these essential safety tips - including techniques to prolong your motorcycle’s performance - you can reduce risks and make every ride as enjoyable as it is safe.
Remember, safety doesn’t end when you park your bike. Regular maintenance is just as crucial for a reliable and worry-free riding experience.
